Four of a kind beats a full house in standard high-hand poker. Four of a kind has four matching ranks; a full house combines three matching ranks with a separate pair.
This guide is for Yono VIP readers learning poker terms. It describes conventional high-hand rules, not a verified Yono VIP room or a claim that every poker variant uses the same ranking system.
Recognise four of a kind
Consider K♠ K♥ K♦ K♣ 3♠. The four kings form the main combination. The remaining three is the fifth card, often called a kicker. Four of a kind is also called quads.
The rank of the four matching cards is compared first. A low fifth card does not turn four kings into a weaker category than a full house.
PokerStars' four-of-a-kind explanation describes that combination and its position above a full house in high-hand games.
Recognise a full house
Consider Q♠ Q♥ Q♦ 7♣ 7♦. The queens form three of a kind and the sevens form a pair: queens full of sevens.
A full house uses both groups. Three matching cards accompanied by two unrelated ranks is only three of a kind, not a full house. Bicycle's poker rules describe the standard combinations.
Compare the category before the card rank
Imagine one hand contains four twos, while another contains three aces and two kings. Under standard high-hand rankings, four twos still wins: four of a kind is the higher category.
The common mistake is to notice the aces first and stop comparing. Use this order instead: identify each five-card combination, compare the hand categories, and only then compare ranks within the same category.
What if both hands are full houses?
Compare the three matching cards first. J-J-J-2-2 beats 10-10-10-A-A because three jacks outrank three tens. The pair matters only if the three-of-a-kind ranks are equal. A full house has no spare kicker outside its three-plus-two structure.
These comparisons follow PokerStars' full-house rules. Shared cards and the particular variant can affect which five cards a player is permitted to use.
Check the room's actual rules
Lowball and wild-card variants can change what counts as a strong hand or which combinations exist. Confirm the variant before applying a general ranking chart. This article does not provide betting advice or guarantee a result.
